Austin’s Story -
The life of 15 year-old Austin Fath quickly changed on New Year's Eve. That's when he and a friend fell off the back of a moving car as it turned a corner inside his Mandeville subdivision.

His family says that resulted in severe brain trauma as his head hit the concrete roadway.

His father says it was a scene he will never forget.

"That was the worst part of my entire life. I've never felt any pain like I had that day," said Austin’s father Fred Fath.

Since then, he and his ex-wife and many other loved ones have been at the LSU Trauma center. It's where surgeons have since temporarily removed a piece of Austin's skull to help reduce the buildup of blood and fluid in his cranium.

"To see him struggle is just heartbreaking to us," said Austin's Mother Colleen Oltmann.

They say the support and prayers they've received from friends and loved ones online on Facebook have been crucial for the family during this tragedy. The outpouring began after Fath posted details of his son's accident on his Facebook wall. He says since then, friends, family and strangers as far away as Thailand have been holding prayer vigils for his son.

Fred Fath is a former NOPD officer who is now a Mandeville Police officer. Austin is still in ICU at University Hospital.
